Moisture in the Electrical Panel

Moisture can seep into the Electrical Panel in your home and that never is a good thing. I was at an electrical emergency call that had this very problem. Most of the moisture that finds its way into the electrical service panel is from rain water. The panel was mounted to a board that was mounted to the block wall. The moisture appeared to be coming in from the service wire that was coming into the top of the panel.

The electrical meter is installed on the outside wall and the wire is exposed to the elements.

Moisture can seep in through the outer jacket run through the wire and right into the panel without you ever knowing it. The best way to fix this is to replace your outside service and install the wiring in a conduit to prevent water from getting in the wire and traveling right into your electrical box.

We had to remove and replace this panel because of the moisture damage.

If you think your panel may have this problem please call or email us and we will check it out for you at no charge.

Your safety is our main concern.

Electrical Panel Issue in Atlanta

Electrical Service installations in Atlanta

Being an electrician and seeing all kinds of electrical work installed in Atlanta, I would just like to comment on some things we should all watch out for.

All over Atlanta you can walk into any business or home and see several electrical code violations. I find it hard sometimes not to point them out, but this is my life and I enjoy what I do. I will start to take more pictures and post them on the site with comments on what I see wrong with the work.

Electrical Panel Issue in Atlanta

Above is a picture of an electrical panel. Can anyone tell me what they see wrong in this picture? The biggest problem is there is no connector to prevent the wire from getting nicked and starting a possible fire. I have a hard time believing that an electrician would actually do something like this but I have seen it. You can see wire connectors on the other wires in the bottom of the electrical box so common sense should tell you maybe we need them for all the wires coming into an electrical box.

Thanks for visiting and stay safe Atlanta.

Electrical Panel Box Maintenance

When was the last time you had your electrical panel box maintained?

If your not sure it may be a good idea to at least cycle your breakers. That involves just turning them on and off. It keeps the contacts in the breakers clean and functional.

It is also a good to have an electrician check out your panel and tighten all your connections in the panel. Over time they do become loose and can overheat and burn up.

This will cost you more money and trouble if not caught early.

If you live in the Metro Atlanta area Lightning Bug Electric can help you with panel box safety and maintenance or any questions you may have.

Electrical Panel Replacement for Federal Pacific Panel

Electrical Panel Replacement for Federal Pacific Panel

Anyone in the electrical field knows the name Federal Pacific or FPE because of their known reputation to fail.

These panels are an extreme hazard according to many experts. Most of those experts have never really seen the field verification that we get on a regular basis. I have personally seen multiple different negative effects from these panels including burnt wires, melted outlets, and several fires.

In one instance I was explaining to a client how an FPE breaker sometimes will not trip the circuit at all when an arc or fault happens. She was in the process of having a kitchen remodel done and didn’t see any reason for the added expense of changing out the main panel until her contractor was cutting through a 2×4 with a sawzall and went straight through a wire.

The breaker didn’t trip, the wire sat there arcing against the wood for quite a bit until the contractor managed to get to the electrical panel and manually shut it down.

She of course immediately called me and had me come back out and replace it right away. These panels are highly dangerous and should be changed out for you and your family’s safety.

Just google FPE or Federal Pacific and see what kinds of hazards are involved in keeping these panels installed. Call or email Lightning Bug Electric today to have your Electrical Panel serviced or replaced.
