Are you thinking of installing Low Voltage Lights under the Kitchen Cabinets?
I thought I would write about kitchen under cabinet lights and how they should be installed.
We just did a job that was permitted in Cobb County in Marietta, GA.
The Contractor originally installed the low voltage under cabinet lights and there was a problem that the inspector caught and failed the job.
I have found that Marietta Inspectors do a great job in making sure that the work they are inspecting is done right and safe. I like it when an inspector actually opens up a box and looks inside to make sure it is right. I remember a few years back when they use to just walk on the job, walk around and just leave and pass it if it just looked nice.
I would hope that electricians and electrical inspectors want to make sure everything they put their name on is safe and will not burn down. You better believe I do not want anything to happen on my watch.
You may think that just because it is low voltage it makes it easier and safer to install. Nothing is safe if not installed properly. I spoke with an Atlanta Electrical Inspector and he told me that he was at a house that caught on fire from the low voltage under cabinet lights that were incorrectly installed.
They ran wire that was not rated behind the cabinets, or in the wall and it was just to small. It overheated and started the fire.
If you choose to install a low voltage system go for it but make sure you install it correctly. You must purchase the correct wire that is rated to be concealed behind walls and make sure the system is sized properly with the amount of lights and right transformer.
The transformer must be indoor rated, so this means NO MALIBU outdoor transformers. I know it is tempting because they are cheaper but it could lead to trouble. Also no Malibu low voltage outdoor landscape wiring should ever be used indoors.
They do make a cable that is rated to be installed behind walls or cabinets that we use, it is a 14/2 or 12/2 cable – it only has a black and red wire.
14/2 stranded CMR/CL3R 300v round, grey PVC jacket. We have not had any problems with running this wiring in Cobb County, with any of the Marietta Inspectors.
