Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors Installed

Smoke alarms save lives. Sixty-five percent of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms at all or no smoke alarms that work. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnection of smoke alarms throughout the home allows the smoke detectors to communicate and if there is a fire in the basement it will set off all the alarms that are connected and hopefully give everyone enough time to get to safety. When one sounds, they all sound. There are different types of smoke detectors for different applications and  all of them should be tested monthly and the batteries changed out annually. Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly.

Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. Testing of carbon monoxide detectors and battery replacement should be performed according to manufactures recommendations. The dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning have been around for awhile but for what ever reason we are just now beginning to see them required in new homes.
