How Office Lighting Effects Your Health

|

If you are a business owner, no doubt you want your employees to be as productive as possible. American office workers spend at least 1/3 of their week in the office. The lighting installed in your building can either aid or hinder their productivity and energy levels. It has been shown that fresh air and the sunshine are incredibly beneficial to employees, but if you are not able to alter your property to let in the natural light, some well-planned lighting is easily the next best thing.

Lighting Temperatures for the Workplace

Not everyone knows that different types of lights have different colors and temperatures, which in turn can impact a person’s mental and physical well-being.

The different light temperatures are:

  • Lower color temperatures are considered “warm” colors. They include lights below 3,000K like the glow from a flame.
  • Mid-range color temperatures are considered “cool white” colors. They include lights between 3,100K and 4,600K like cool white fluorescent lights.
  • High color temperatures are considered “cool” colors. They include lights over 4,600K like fluorescent lights.

According to experts, the best kind of light for productivity is the cool light color. When natural light isn’t an option, try to incorporate “blue-enriched” lights that measure at 17,000K. Not only do these lights support mental vitality, but they also hinder melatonin production, a hormone that makes you feel tired.

Not everyone appreciates the stark harshness of cool lighting, though. Adding some warm lighting here and there in your workplace can help improve the feeling of comfort and relaxation for employees. This can also be beneficial in places like meeting rooms where you want your employees to feel comfortable and free to open up.
