Top 10 Holiday Electrical Safety Tips

Lightning Bug Electric cares about the wellbeing of our clients throughout the Marietta and Atlanta areas. We understand that the risks of electrical fire or injuries can increase around the holidays due to festive seasonal lighting. Follow these safety tips to ensure that you stay safe this holiday season.

10 ways you can stay safe from electrical injuries this holiday:

  1. Check decorations for damage before you use them. Cracked bulbs, frayed wires, and loose connections can cause a fire or shock.
  2. Don’t overload your outlet. Overloading an electrical outlet can cause a fire, so make sure you don’t plug too many in and plug only one high-wattage appliance in per outlet.
  3. Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. More than three strands connected has a high risk of blowing a fuse or starting a fire.
  4. Don’t let your tree dry out. Keep it fresh and watered. Dry trees are a serious fire hazard since the lights on the dry branches can quickly heat and ignite.
  5. Stay away from real candles. Candles start almost half of holiday fires. To create the ambiance of a candle, stick to battery operated décor.
  6. Don’t keep combustibles in warm places. Keeping the tree and gifts near the fire might seem like a good idea for your holiday pictures, but can ultimately be a hazard.
  7. Keep your cords from being damaged. Keep them from getting pinched or damaged by nails, staples, or in small spaces.
  8. Make sure your décor has been certified. Check your decorations for certification labels from an independent testing lab. If they haven’t been tested for safety, they could be a risk.
  9. Don’t wander off while cooking. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of cooking fires. If you are baking something for the family, watch to make sure everything comes out okay.
  10. Unplug before going to sleep or going out. Turn off all lights and decorations if you aren’t going to be attending to your home. It is always better safe than sorry.
